Isabella Santos Foundation and Catawba Riverkeeper are partnering together to give children battling cancer and their families a day of rest and adventure. We invite you to join us on Saturday, August 27th for a fun-filled day in the great outdoors sponsored by Pure Intentions Coffee.
The day’s activities will immerse kids in the beauty and serenity of North Carolina’s outdoors and expose them to the recuperative benefits of nature. Located on the banks of the Catawba River in McAdenville NC, Catawba Riverkeeper programs offer outdoor adventures to strengthen the mind, body, and spirit. Activities can be customized to accommodate any fitness level or limitations; no experience required. Families will have the opportunity to learn from scientists and guides about how to safely have fun on the water as well as learn about plant and animal life of the river basin. Activities include: kayaking, raft rides, hiking/walking, wildlife education, games and lunch/snacks. Review all activities and register below!
This is a private event for Levine Children’s cancer patients. Space is limited and will be on a first come first serve basis, registration required and will close when full.

Catawba Riverkeeper is a licensed outfitter and will provide professional guides and high-quality equipment. To help make this adventure experience as safe as possible, there will be Atrium Health Levine Children’s oncology staff in attendance. All activities and lunches are provided by the Isabella Santos Foundation in partnership with Catawba Riverkeeper and Pure Intentions Coffee with registration. Waivers required. Times & Location: On-Going, 9 am – 11:30 am. Meet on the South Form McAdenville Greenway & Blueway Launch area at the Catawba Riverkeeper tent.
Activity Level: Guests must be at least 4 years of age and accompanied by an adult on the raft if under 18 years of age. There is a very small chance you may get wet on this trip. This experience is great for those who cannot be on the water and under the sun for long and for those with limited physical ability.
Description: See the historic R.Y. McAden Mill Dam in all its glory from the water! Enjoy a 15–20-minute raft ride from the South Fork McAdenville Blueway Launch guided by a professional raft guide. The guide will ensure that you feel comfortable on this short trip.
Time & Location: 9:30 – 10:30 am & 10:30 – 11:30 am. Limited spots available
Activity Level: Guests must be at least 4 years of age and accompanied by an adult on the raft if under 18 years of age. There is a small chance you may get wet on this trip. This experience is great for beginners and the most accommodating water activity for those with limited physical ability but able to be on the water for around 1 hour with limited shade.
Description: Float down the South Fork River on a raft! Enjoy a leisure water ride from McAdenville to Cramerton for approximately 1 hour through the historic mill towns that are becoming revitalized through outdoor recreation. You may see a range of turtle and bird species along the way. Professional raft guides will ensure that you feel comfortable throughout your journey. At the end of your trip, a shuttle bus will take you back to where you started at the home base of River Rest Fest. You have a choice between getting on a raft where a few guests may be able to paddle or a raft where only the raft guide paddles (rows, actually).
Time & Location: On-Going, 9am – 11:00 am. Meet on the South Fork McAdenville Greenway & Blueway Launch area at the Catawba Riverkeeper tent.
Activity Level: Guests must be at least 4 years of age to ride in a tandem kayak with an adult, 8 years of age to ride in a single kayak, and accompanied by an adult in another kayak on the water if under 18 years of age. Guests may get wet on this trip. This experience is great for beginners who are physically able to paddle for 1 to 1.5 hours in moving water with limited shade.
Description: Kayak down the South Fork River! Enjoy a leisure paddle on gentle flowing water with no rapids from McAdenville to Cramerton for approximately 1.5 miles which may take 1 to 1.5 hours through the historic mill towns that are experiencing revitalization through outdoor recreation. You may see a range of turtle and bird species along the way. This is a self-guided experience, but a Riverkeeper staff member will help you get in a single or tandem kayak as well as provide you with basic safety and paddling instruction on land before you get on the water. Once you reach the end of this journey in Cramerton, another Riverkeeper staff member will help you get out of the water. There will be a shuttle bus to take you back to where you started at the home base of River Rest Fest.
Time & Location: 9 am – 12 pm. Meet at the Boathouse. Limited spots are available.
Activity Level: Guests must be at least 12 years of age and accompanied by an adult on the water in another kayak. You will get wet on this trip. There is a chance you may fall out of your kayak. While this trip is suitable for beginner to intermediate paddlers and fully supported by kayak guides, this experience is the most technical one out of all the activities offered during River Rest Fest.
Description: Have an authentic river trip experience only 20 minutes from Charlotte on the South Fork River! This 5.5-mile paddle will last approximately 2.5 hours and go through mostly conserved forested land with possible wildlife sightings including birds like the Great Blue Heron and Osprey, Yellow-Bellied Slider turtles, and deer. Guests might experience Class I or Class II whitewater at various points along the way. Professional kayak guides will lead the trip and help everyone feel comfortable on the water and in their kayak. They will provide you with safety information and basic paddling skills and help you navigate the water. All guests will be provided a single sit-on-top kayak, paddle, life vest, and helmet (to wear only during the rocky areas). You will meet at the Riverkeeper’s Boathouse in McAdenville and be shuttled up to the start of the trip in Spencer Mountain. The trip will end back at The Boathouse.

Times & Location: 9 am – 9:30 am, 10 am – 10:30 am & 11 am – 11:30 am. Meet at the trailhead of the South Form McAdenville Greenway.
Description: Join a Riverkeeper educator for a 30-minute walk along the South Fork McAdenville Greenway. This walk will take place along the paved, shaded greenway path that runs parallel to the South Fork River. While we walk, the Riverkeeper educator will share information about the local ecology, history of the river, issues the river faces, and more. The walk is an out-and-back style with approximately 0.25 miles each way. The path is ADA accessible. All ages are welcome.
Times & Location: 9:30 am – 10:15 am & 11 am – 11:45 am. Meet at the trailhead of the South Fork Trail via golf cart from the River Rest Fest home base or by driving or walking over.
Description: Join a Riverkeeper educator for a 45-minute hike on the South Fork Trail – a historic Native American trading path. This walk will take place along a natural surface trail that is mostly flat but does have rocks, roots, and some sloping spots. While we walk, the Riverkeeper educator will share information about the local ecology, history of the river, issues the river faces, plant identification, and more. The walk is an out-and-back style with approximately 0.75-1.0 miles each way. The path is not ADA accessible. All ages are welcome.

Description: Stop by the Education Station to play, create and learn about our natural environment and the water we all depend on! There will be various games, crafts, and displays to interact with while under a shade tent with the option to sit down to participate.
